Spotted Turtle



Spotted Turtle

  • Habitat: Shallow wetlands
  • Range: Eastern panhandle in West Virginia
  • Ecosystem Importance: Control larval insect population

  • Eating: Worms, slugs, grass
  • Offspring: 3 to 5 eggs per clutch (2 clutches a year)
  • Mating: Males chase females underwater while biting at her legs and carapace, then mounts her shell, biting at her head and neck

  • Life Cycle: 25-30 years
  • Adult Size: Top shell has a length ranging from 3.5-5.4 inches  
  • Identification: Yellow spots on dark shell

Leopard Gecko





Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius)


Habitat: Rocky, dry grassland and desert regions
Range: South-Asian Afghanistan, Pakistan, North-West India, and some parts of Iran
Ecosystem Importance: They control the insect population


Eating: In the wild, they eat other lizards, insects, spiders, and scorpions. They eat 4-10 food items    every 2-3 days. 
Offspring: Lay two eggs as many as ten times in a season
Mating: When introduced, males rattle their tails then grasp the females neck skin in his mouth and engages in intercourse 
Life Cycle: 20 years, some make it to 30 years
Adult Size: Females are 7-8 inches and 50-70 grams and males are 8-11 inches and 60-80 grams
Identification: Pale yellow base with several tiny brown spots all over body

Sulcata Tortoise

  • Habitat: Dry, heated areas going from 85-105 degrees during the day and 70 degrees at night
  • Range: Southern Sahara through surrounding countries
  • Ecosystem importance: Their claws dig big holes in the deserts. Everything living in the desert uses their burrows to get out of the heat.

  • Eating: Grass, weeds, fruits, and vegetables. Graze for hours a day.
  • Offspring: 12-24 eggs
  • Mating: Males are aggressive and battle each other to win the female

  • Adult size: Males weighing over 200 lbs, females half that much. Length up to 30 inches.
